Murrayfield Racers 4 Dynamos 5
Report by Richard Stirling (Ice Hockey Herald No 20 9th January
1971).
A surprise result in this held-over first leg of the 1969-70 'Icy Smith Cup Final. Racers were never in the
lead in a fast, exciting game, and were in fact two goals down at the end of the first period. Dynamos opened the scoring
through B. Stevenson, the play being made by R. Stevenson who got his side's second with a fine solo effort.
Early in the second period, Racers had what appeared to be a good goal disallowed when M'Millan tipped in a pass
from Kerr. The referees ruled, however, that the puck had been kicked into the net. Soon after, W. Lavety put B. Stevenson
through to increase the vistors margin.
At last Racers hit a hot streak, and scored three goals in three minutes,
the second while W. Lavety was cooling off in the box after a high sticking minor. D.Reilly, from Lovell, opened for Racers,
Waughscored unassisted; and then G. Reilly moved in from the point to claim a fine goal to levelmatters. .B. Stevenson restored
Dynamos lead thirty seconds from the end of the period when he completed his hat-trick.
In the final frame Dynamos increased their lead to 5-3 when Carroll scor:ed unassisted. Four minutes after the change
round Lovell pulled one back for Racers while R. stevenson was off for holding. From that point until the fiinal whistle all
the pressure came from Racers, but they just could'nt find a way past Laird for the equaliser.
This defeat sets Racers a hard task for the second leg in Glasgow on 24th January. But it is far from impossible-remember
last season's play-off final?
