21.2.71 Glasgow Dynamos 8 Ayr Bruins 4 Ayrshire Advertiser Report Feb 1971

Bruins Miss Chances

Glasgow Dynamos 8 Ayr Bruins

Despite Dynamos four goal winning margin, this match was much closer than the score suggests, and only a procession of missed chances killed Bruins’ hopes of taking at least a draw. The match was played at a tremendous pace and in the opening period there was bags of excitement round both goals.

It took the home side 15 minutes to open the scoring, a D Lavety shot being deflected past the helpless Newall. Bruins drew level three minutes later when Weir skated past three opponents and coolly beat Nelson with a high shot. While Bruins were under penalty, W Lavety scored twice in quick succession to put Dynamos 3-1 ahead.

Al McCrae reduced the leeway after McBride and Brennan had created the opening for him. But Bruins’ joy was short lived and R Stevenson notched a quick double to give the Glasgow side a 5-2 advantage. Then from the face-off at the Bruins end W Brennan was given plenty of time and space to pick his spot in the net behind Newall. Ally Brennan of Ayr scored a great slap shot just before the end of the period – and added another shortly after the changeover to boost Ayr’s total to four.

Making an all out bid to pull back the deficit, Bruins were twice caught out in the final period and B Stevenson and W Brennan completed the scoring to give Dynamos an 8-4 victory.

Great Britain 17 The Rest 1

Ally Brennan scored twice and Jackson McBride once for GB , while young Ian McCord notched the Rest’s consolation goal thirty seconds from time. GB were brilliantly led by centreman  R Stevenson who finished the match with a personal tally of five goals and six assists.

The report in the Ayrshire Advertiser, which obviously saw things from a Bruins perspective suggested that the game was much closer than the score suggests and that only a procession of missed chances stopped Bruins at least getting a draw in a game that was played at a tremendous pace throughout.
